As living rooms are where the family gathers and guests are entertained, they have to be both stylish and comfortable. Here are some of our favourites:

1.TAILOR MADE

They always say that your home should reflect your taste and this is certainly true of interior designer Sheila Jorgensen’s living room. Comfortable and inviting, it’s furnished with paintings and artefacts collected over the years and put together in a way that’s stylish and contemporary.

2. LAYERED LUXURY

Our favourite living rooms - SA Garden and Home

The visual appeal of this striking living room designed by Karen Marsden is the result of the strong contrast between the clean modern lines of the furniture and the rich textures of the wallpaper and luxurious rug.

3. MODERN ELEGANCE

A monochromatic scheme can look cold and boring. However, in this Cape Town apartment, it’s anything but. To give the room grandeur and elegance, Studio Dylan Thomaz used moulding to create the effect of panelling and offset this with furniture with sculptural shapes. Adding to the sense of comfort are the rugs layered one of top of the other.

4. COLOURFUL EXPRESSION

SA Garden and Home

This brilliantly accessorised living room by designer Amanda Walters was inspired by a box of coloured pencils. While the white walls and sofas show off the vibrant fabrics and artwork that Amanda has collected over the years, they also prevent them from being overwhelming.

5. GALLIC INFLUENCE

This Cape Town living room designed by Tessa Proudfoot is proof that elegance can be comfortable. The Parisian style emphasised by the herring bone floors and elegant antiques is ideal for hosting chic parties but you can also imagine relaxing here with a book, feet up on the upholstered ottoman.

6. DRAMATIC ARTS

Although this living room is small, Suttie & Marais Designs made it feel much larger by painting the walls in a dark colour and upholstering the sofa in a similar shade so that it blends in. The floor to ceiling curtains also draw the eye upwards visually improving the proportions.
