Top 5 breakfast spots in Cape Town

Breakfast is certainly my favourite meal of the day. I love nothing more than heading out on a Sunday for a delicious breakfast in the Mother City. There are so many divine places but here are my top five spots, says Cape Town contributing decor ed Catherine Zachariou

Tashas Canal Walk

Tashas

Tashas

An institution in the South African dining industry, you can’t visit a major local city without coming across a Tashas, and thank goodness for that. A branch was recently opened in the Canal Walk Shopping Mall and I happily make take the trip to get my fix on a Sunday morning. For all the health conscious fundis, the Quinoa Breakfast Tart is a must-have, or treat yourself to fluffy pancakes topped with crispy bacon, blueberries and mascarpone – heavenly.

Skinny Legs and All

Skinny legs and all
This luxury cafe was recently taken over by a mother-and-daughter team. Apart from making nutritious and delicious meals, the café also doubles as an exhibition space for local artists. If you want to get an idea of their delicious fare then follow their Instagram account, it’s mouth-wateringly good.

Starlings

Starlings
The home-style setting of Starlings makes you feel as though you’re popping in for a cup of tea with an old friend. Don’t be fooled by this description – there’s no sign of knitted doillies or bunting here, this place is chic with a capital C. The eggs benedict is a must as are their delicious Rooibos cappuccinos.

Belvedere Rd, Claremont

Knead at Palmyra Junction

Knead
Another institution in the Cape Town dining scene, Knead has long been my go-to place for a no- fuss breakfast without the grease. Their breakfast pizza is a highlight, or for something more traditional, you can’t go wrong with the roast tomato and wild mushroom eggs benedict. This place gets packed on a Sunday so be sure to secure a seat early on in the day.

Orchard on Long

Orchard

Orchard

Not really a breakfast place per se (although they do serve delicious sandwiches), but if you’ve jumped onto the juicing bandwagon then this is the place to get your fix. This juice bar caters for every taste, but my favourite has to be the almond milk cold-pressed juice coupled with a choc nut ball or two.
