Art director Hema Nana picks her four favourite home apps
In today’s digital age there’s an app for just about everything – even home improvement. Whether it’s DIY tips, a paint calculator or a room planner, there’s something for every homeowner or renovator.
This app has five tools:
- Plumb bob level: Use it to verify the verticality of lines or walls.
- Surface level: Use it to ensure that a surface is flat and level.
- Bubble lever bar: Use it to measure a digital level.
- Ruler: Measure whatever you need to in both inches and centimetres. Swipe left or right to measure more than what’s seen on the screen.
- Protractor: Use it to measure angles from 0 to 180 degrees.
HOMESTYLER INTERIOR DESIGN
Autodesk’s Homestyler is a multiplatform free app that lets you plan how you’re going to furnish a room and share your design with other users. You can choose empty rooms to furnish with virtual furniture by picking items that you can actually buy, or using mock ones that don’t have a real-life replica but that you can perhaps get made by a designer or a carpenter. The app is equipped with all types of rooms, furniture pieces, fixtures, electronics, and even a large selection of paint colours for walls.
HOUZZ INTERIOR DESIGN IDEAS
Houzz is the Wikipedia of interior and exterior design. The Houzz app has an extensive archive of images, articles and discussions, whether you’re looking for DIY how-tos, furniture inspiration or decor tips. The products and suppliers are unfortunately not available in South Africa, but the app is great to browse for ideas.
PLASCON INSPIRE ME
This app displays thousands of Plascon colours making it easy to choose the perfect one and purchase it from your nearest retailer. The app also has the ability to find colours in photos you upload to it. You can save your favourite swatches and the product guide will help you decide which paints to use and how best to use them.
