Antiques at home: National Antiques & Decorative Arts Faire 2015

Last updated on 10 November 2016

“The effect of vintage and retro decor movements on our perception of antiques becomes clear when visiting events like the National Antiques and Decorative Arts (Naada) Faire held this past weekend at the Sandton Convention Centre,” says guest blogger Belinda Fourie

Here, items such as retro wooden clocks and oriental ginger jars, commonplace in today’s decor stores, are at ease among cigarette holders and other silver trinkets, fur coats, military figurines and Royal Doulton porcelain collections.

Other trendy items you’re able to source from antique dealers are heavy colonial display cabinets and dining chairs, Oriental chests of drawers and large cast iron statues, as well as Art Deco pieces – one of the most popular current trends.

Before Art Deco reproductions made their way to our stores, non-antique enthusiasts may have had difficulty incorporating them into modern homes. The style’s geometric lines, stainless steel trim and use of natural wood and stone provide a variety of touch points with current trends. It also means that mixing patterns, and brown with black, is no longer taboo.

Here are some vintage and vintage-inspired products I love:

This Art Deco clock garniture set (R4 800, Billymoon and Agatha’s Antiques) in a mix of marble makes an ideal feature piece in a modern living room or reception area. Combine it with a geometric black and white rug (R1 495, Weylandts) and Retro (R495, Weylandts) and Mr Moustache (R250, Weylandts) scatter cushions.

This rich light blush and black occasional chair (R1 200, Mr Price Home) picks up subtle tones in the marble of the featured clock while a faux fur throw (R1 499, Woolworths) adds warmth and ties in with the brown.

An empty sideboard or coffee table provides the perfect display for another antique faire item like this Haig whisky pinch bottle (R6 950, Cowboys and Angels Antiques).
