Whether it’s a price tag on a new vase, your child’s wall decals, or old labels on storage containers, sticker residue has a way of hanging around long after the sticker is gone.

Here are some easy ways to remove sticker marks from walls, wood, plastic, glass and other household surfaces.

Start with warm soapy water

Before reaching for stronger solutions, try the simplest option first. Mix a few drops of dishwashing liquid with warm water and gently rub the area using a soft cloth or sponge. This often works well on fresh sticker residue, especially on plastic, glass and sealed surfaces. Avoid soaking wooden items, as excess moisture can damage the finish.

Use a hairdryer

Heat is one of the easiest ways to loosen stubborn adhesive. Hold a hairdryer a few centimetres from the sticker mark and warm the area for 20 to 30 seconds. Once the glue softens, wipe it away with a cloth or gently scrape it off using a plastic card. This method works particularly well on walls, glass, plastic and furniture.

Try cooking oil

Vegetable oil, olive oil and even coconut oil can help break down sticky residue. Apply a small amount to the sticker mark and leave it for a few minutes before wiping clean with a cloth. Once the residue is gone, wash the surface with warm soapy water to remove any oily film.

Best for:

  • Plastic containers
  • Glass jars
  • Metal surfaces
  • Sealed wood

White vinegar for tough residue

White vinegar is a household cleaning hero for a reason. Soak a cloth with vinegar and place it over the sticker mark for a few minutes. The acidity helps dissolve the adhesive, making it easier to wipe away.

This works particularly well on:

  • Glass
  • Plastic
  • Tiles
  • Metal

Always test first on painted or delicate surfaces.

Baking soda paste

For extra stubborn sticker marks, make a paste using baking soda and a little water. Gently rub the paste onto the residue using a soft cloth. The mild abrasive action helps lift sticky buildup without scratching most surfaces.

Avoid using this method on highly polished or delicate finishes.

Rubbing alcohol

Rubbing alcohol can quickly dissolve many types of adhesive. Apply a small amount to a cotton pad and gently rub the sticker mark until it lifts away. This is especially effective for older residue that has hardened over time.

Suitable for:

  • Glass
  • Plastic
  • Metal
  • Sealed surfaces

Always spot-test first, particularly on painted walls and varnished furniture.

What not to do

While it may be tempting to attack sticker residue with whatever is nearby, avoid:

  • Steel wool
  • Sharp knives or razor blades
  • Harsh abrasive cleaners
  • Excessive scrubbing
  • Strong solvents on painted surfaces

These can scratch, discolour or permanently damage the surface you’re trying to clean.
