The snake plant has earned its reputation as the most reliable houseplant for a reason. Formally classified as Dracaena trifasciata, though still widely known by its previous name Sansevieria, it tolerates a level of neglect that would finish most other houseplants outright: low light, infrequent watering, temperature fluctuations and months without feeding. In return, it offers striking architectural form, a near-permanent freshness of appearance and the kind of longevity that allows it to outlast several owners if it ends up in the right household.
Light requirements
Snake plants are genuinely tolerant of low light conditions, which makes them one of the few houseplants that can thrive in a north-facing room or an interior office space with only artificial light. They grow faster and produce more vibrant leaf colouring in bright, indirect light, and will tolerate a few hours of direct morning sun, but they will also survive in considerably lower light conditions than most other houseplants require. Avoid sustained harsh direct sun through a south- or west-facing window in summer, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering
Overwatering is the single most common cause of snake plant failure, and it kills more of them than any other issue. The plant stores water in its thick, fleshy leaves and roots, and needs significantly less water than most other houseplants. In summer, water thoroughly when the top two to three centimetres of soil feel completely dry, and then allow the soil to dry out almost entirely before the next watering. In winter, the plant barely needs water at all: once every three to four weeks is typically sufficient, or even less for plants in very low light.
Water at the base of the plant rather than over the leaves. Moisture collecting in the rosette of leaves can cause rot at the growing point. Ensure the pot has drainage holes and never allow the plant to sit in water in a saucer, since prolonged wet roots lead to root rot quickly.
Soil and potting
A well-draining potting mix is essential. Standard houseplant potting mix improved with perlite, coarse river sand or fine gravel in a roughly 2:1 ratio provides the drainage that prevents waterlogging while retaining enough moisture for root absorption. Cactus and succulent potting mix also works well for snake plants. Repot when roots begin growing through the drainage holes or when the plant visibly bulges in its pot, typically every two to three years. Choose a pot only one size larger than the current one: snake plants do not mind being slightly root-bound and actually flower more reliably in this condition.
Temperature and humidity
Snake plants are well-suited to the South African indoor environment. They tolerate temperatures between 10 and 35 degrees Celsius, making them comfortable in both the mild coastal winters of KZN and the cold Highveld winters where indoor temperatures may drop significantly. They do not require high humidity and handle the dry air of a centrally heated room in winter without the leaf edge browning that afflicts more tropical species.
Feeding
Snake plants are not hungry plants. A diluted balanced liquid fertiliser applied once or twice during the growing season, October through March in South Africa, is sufficient. Feeding in winter is counterproductive and should be avoided, since the plant is not actively growing and cannot use the nutrients.
Propagation
Snake plants propagate readily by two methods. Division is the faster route: when repotting, separate the offsets, the smaller plants that develop around the base of the mother plant, and pot them individually. Each offset should have some root attached to establish quickly.
Leaf cutting propagation takes longer but allows you to produce multiple plants from a single leaf. Cut a healthy leaf into sections of about eight centimetres each, allow the cut ends to callus for a day, then insert the cuttings upright into damp propagating mix with the cut end that was closest to the soil at the bottom. Maintain warmth and moderate moisture until roots develop, which takes four to eight weeks.
Common problems
Mushy, yellowing leaves at the base indicate root rot from overwatering. Remove the plant from its pot, trim all affected roots and repot in fresh, dry mix, and significantly reduce watering frequency. Brown leaf tips are typically caused by fluoride in tap water or inconsistent watering; using collected rainwater and maintaining a more consistent watering schedule usually resolves this. Wrinkled, thin leaves indicate the plant is thirsty and overdue for water.
