Winter can be a challenging season for gardeners, but a well-managed greenhouse can continue producing healthy plants even during the coldest months. By creating the right environment and paying attention to a few key factors, you can keep your greenhouse thriving throughout winter.
1. Maximise available light
Shorter days and weaker sunlight can slow plant growth during winter. Keep greenhouse panels clean to allow as much light as possible to enter. Position plants where they can receive maximum sunlight, and consider using supplemental grow lights if natural light is limited.

2. Maintain consistent temperatures
Temperature fluctuations can stress plants and reduce productivity. Use insulation such as bubble wrap designed for greenhouses to retain heat. Monitor temperatures regularly and, if necessary, use a greenhouse heater to prevent freezing conditions. Most winter crops thrive when temperatures remain stable.
3. Control humidity and ventilation
While it may seem counterintuitive in winter, proper ventilation remains essential. Excess humidity can encourage mould, mildew, and fungal diseases. Open vents or doors on milder days to improve air circulation and reduce moisture buildup while maintaining a comfortable environment for plants.
4. Water wisely
Plants generally require less water during winter because growth slows and evaporation rates decrease. Overwatering can lead to root rot and other problems. Check soil moisture before watering and ensure containers and beds have adequate drainage.
5. Choose cold-tolerant crops
Selecting the right plants can make winter greenhouse gardening far more successful. Leafy greens such as spinach, kale, lettuce, and Swiss chard perform well in cooler conditions. Herbs like parsley and cilantro can also thrive, providing fresh harvests throughout the season.

A thriving winter greenhouse depends on balancing light, temperature, humidity, and water while growing crops suited to cooler conditions.
With careful management, your greenhouse can remain productive and healthy all winter long, providing fresh produce and a rewarding gardening experience even when outdoor conditions are harsh.
