Sage bundles have long been valued for their pleasant aroma and are often used in homes for fragrance, mindfulness practices or simply as decorative dried herbs.
Making your own sage bundle is a simple, rewarding project that allows you to use fresh herbs from your garden or locally sourced plants.
What you’ll need
- Fresh sage stems (straight from your garden)
- Cotton string or natural twine
- Scissors
- Rosemary, lavender, thyme, eucalyptus or other aromatic herbs
- A cool, dry place for drying

Step 1: Harvest your herbs
Choose healthy sage stems and harvest them in the morning after the dew has dried. Freshly cut stems should be cut around 15 to 20 centimetres long. If you plan to mix with other herbs, gather them at the same time.
Step 2: Arrange your bundle
Lay the sage stems together, placing the larger stems in the centre and the smaller ones around the outside. Keep adding some herbs to create a fuller bundle and enhance the fragrance.
Step 3: Tie it securely
Starting at the base of your stems, wrap the cotton string tightly around the bundle. Continue winding the string upward in a spiral way, then back down again to hold everything firmly in place. Tie a secure knot at the base.
You need to remember that the herbs will shrink as they dry, so tying the bundle tightly helps keep it intact.
Step 4: Dry the bundle
With the bundle tied securely, hang the bundle upside down in a dry space away from direct sunlight. Drying usually takes one to two weeks, depending on humidity and bundle thickness. When the leaves feel crisp and the stems are dry, your bundle is ready.
Step 5: Enjoy your handmade creation
Once fully dried, your sage bundle can be displayed as a decorative piece or used to naturally fragrance any room.
