Agapanthus, also known as African lily, is a beautiful South African plant loved for its striking blue, purple or white flowers and long, green leaves.
It is also relatively easy to care for, making it a great choice for gardens and containers. With the right amount of sunlight, water and maintenance, your agapanthus can reward you with a spectacular display of flowers.
Here are three simple steps to keep your agapanthus healthy and looking its best.
Provide plenty of sunshine
Agapanthus plants are sun-loving plants, so when growing these plants, choose a bright position where they can receive plenty of direct sunlight.
Growing them in full sun encourages strong growth and better flowering. Although the plant can tolerate some semi-shade, too much of it can reduce the number of flowers your plants produce.
When your agapanthus produces lots of leaves but very few flowers, insufficient sunlight could be one of the reasons.

Water them well
These plants need regular moisture while they are actively growing, particularly during warmer months. However, established Agapanthus plants are relatively drought-tolerant and generally don’t need constant watering.
During very dry periods, additional water can help support flowering for the following season.
When these plants are grown in containers, they usually need more attention because their soil can dry out faster. You need to keep an eye on the potting mix and avoid allowing container-grown plants to become completely dry during the growing season.
Remove faded flowers and tidy your plant
Once the flowers have faded, remove the flower heads by cutting the flower’s stalk back to its base.
Deadheading can encourage the plant to continue flowering and keep it looking neat. If you enjoy the appearance of seedheads, you can leave some of them in place for additional seasonal interest.
Yellow or damaged leaves can also be removed to keep the plant tidy. Deciduous varieties naturally lose their foliage, so allow those leaves to die back before removing them.

Taking care of agapanthus doesn’t have to be complicated. Give it sunshine, water it appropriately and keep it tidy, and you’ll have a healthy plant with a much better chance of producing its beautiful flower clusters.
