Spring is a season of new growth, blooming plants, and thriving gardens. However, it also brings increased pest activity. As temperatures rise, insects and other garden pests become more active, searching for food, shelter, and places to reproduce.

Preparing your garden before spring arrives can help prevent infestations and keep your plants healthy throughout the growing season.

Clean up any winter debris

One of the first steps in spring pest prevention is removing leftover garden debris. These include fallen leaves, dead plants, weeds, and piles of organic material that can provide hiding places and breeding areas for pests.

Be sure to clear away old plant matter and compost healthy materials properly, and remove any diseased plants from your garden.

Inspect your plants

Inspect your plants before spring growth begins. Before any new growth appears, inspect your existing plants, shrubs, and trees for signs of pests. Watch out for damaged leaves, unusual spots, insect eggs, webbing, or sticky residue on plant surfaces. Early detection allows you to address problems before pest populations increase.

Maintain healthy soil and plants

Healthy plants are better able to resist pest damage. Improve soil quality by adding compost or organic matter and ensure plants receive the correct amount of water and nutrients. Overwatering or poor drainage can weaken plants and create conditions that attract pests.

Strong, healthy plants are less vulnerable to many common garden problems.

Remove any standing water

Standing water provides ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes and other pests. Before spring arrives, check out your garden for areas where water collects, such as plant trays, blocked gutters, buckets, and low spots in the yard. Improve drainage and remove unnecessary containers that can collect rainwater.

Use preventive pest treatments

Applying appropriate preventive treatments before spring pest activity peaks can provide an extra layer of protection. Natural options such as horticultural oils, insecticidal soaps, and organic pest deterrents may help manage early pest populations.

For larger gardens or recurring pest problems, professional advice can help identify risks and choose effective solutions.

Spring is a time for your garden to flourish. A little prevention before the season begins can help protect your plants and create a healthier outdoor space all year long.
