Growing peas may sound like a gardening endeavour relegated to spring, but with the right setup and growing conditions, you can yield a delicious crop of crisp peas indoors year-round. To help you cultivate a healthy crop, here how you can get it done easily.
How to plant peas indoors
Planting peas indoors is a straightforward and low-maintenance process. To achieve the best results, begin by selecting a pot with sufficient depth for the pea seeds. This will provide ample space for the plants to grow to maturity without the need for repotting. Start by filling the container with well-draining soil, then sow the pea seeds about 1/2 inch deep. It’s recommended to plant two to three seeds per container.
Caring for your peas
Peas are very easy to grow, yes, and do not require too much maintenance. With these simple tips, you can make sure your indoor pea crop thrives.
- Water: Allow the pea seeds to remain moist throughout the entire germination and growing process.
- Light: Pea seeds need about eight to 10 hours of sunlight to thrive. A south-facing window is the best at providing the right light. You can, however, place it in indirect light if a window is not providing enough sunlight. Alternatively, you can opt for LED lighting.
- Soil: Plant your pea seeds in potting soil that is amended with compost for indoor gardening. The seeds do best in well-draining, fertile soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH.
- Fertiliser: Be sure to look for a fertiliser that provides a balanced amount of nutrients to the soil. One with higher levels of phosphorus and potassium to promote growth without excessive growth of leaves.
- Temperature: Your peas prefer humid temperatures. If you can’t maintain a range of humidity indoors, consider using a heat mat.
Many pea varieties are suitable for indoor growing; just select the right ones for you to begin.
