Gardening, indoors and out, gives your kids a sense of achievement. Looking after houseplants can improve their confidence, self-esteem and wellbeing, and give them a sense of purpose and responsibility. A beautiful indoor space, full of plants, can also bring wellbeing benefits for parents.
These are a few of the safest plants to grow around children
Spider plants
With narrow, variegated leaves, this popular houseplant produces an abundance of cascading, spider-like baby plants. The spider plants can tolerate neglect and are easy to propagate, as babies can be easily potted or rooted in water. The plant can have racemes of tiny white flowers, which are borne on the plant’s long stems, with plantlets forming along the branching flower stems.
Venus flytrap
Children love plants that are interesting and a bit different. A Venus flytrap is exactly that, the right curiosity your kids need. So why not try Venus flytraps for your older kids? Just remember that these carnivorous plants are not to be fed biscuits, cheese or any kind of food.

Snake plants
These are among the easiest yet most dramatic of all houseplants, and remain popular. Robust and undemanding, they thrive in both bright and low light. Perfect plants to grow with kids. These evergreens are perennials forming a clump of stiff, upright, sword-shaped, variegated, deep green leaves with pale grey-green banding. They occasionally have fragrant flowers that may appear in summer or during the autumn season.
Chinese evergreen
Chinese Evergreens have larger leaves that are available in a wide range of patterns and increasingly in a variety of colours, which include pinks or deep reds. These make for great interior plants and develop new growth even when not in direct light. The good thing to note about these plants is that they have average watering needs, so avoid over-watering.
