It’s no secret that TikTok has influenced our foodie choices over the past year or so. We’ve used milk frothers to whip our butter, we’ve hunted down the nearest mochi, placed our online orders for crystal candy, and tried a slew of new recipes we wouldn’t ever have come across if it weren’t for our beloved FYP’s (For You Pages).
In celebration of all the fabulous foodie trends we’ve tacked onto, we’re jumping down the wormhole to give you an overview of some of the standout foodie trends that have washed up on our FYP’s so far. Let’s dive.

Whipped butter

 

TikTok’s whipped brown butter trend is a twist on the popular whipped butter trend. Instead of using regular butter, the recipe calls for brown butter, which is made by heating butter until it turns brown and develops a nutty flavor.

To make whipped brown butter, the brown butter is melted down, then whipped with an electric mixer or blender over ice, until it becomes light and fluffy.

Some variations of the recipe call for adding in additional ingredients, such as sugar, cinnamon, or vanilla extract, to enhance the flavour.

Whipped coffee

 

The whipped coffee trend, also known as Dalgona coffee, is a viral trend that originated in South Korea. It involves making a frothy coffee by whipping together instant coffee, sugar, and hot water until it becomes light and fluffy, then spooning it on top of cold or warm milk.

To make whipped coffee, equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and hot water are typically mixed together in a bowl or mug. The mixture is then whipped with an electric mixer or whisk until it becomes thick and frothy, with a texture similar to whipped cream. The whipped coffee is then spooned on top of a glass of milk, which can be served hot or cold

Mochi

 

Mochi are bite-sized balls of chewy mochi dough, filled with a variety of sweet and savoury fillings. Mochi is a traditional Japanese dessert made from sticky rice flour that has been steamed and pounded into a chewy dough.

To make mochi, rice flour is typically mixed with sugar and water to create a dough that is then rolled into small balls. The mochi balls are then filled with different types of fillings, such as cream, fresh fruit, or chocolate.

Pancake cereal

 

Pancake cereal involves making tiny, bite-sized pancakes and serving them in a bowl like cereal. The pancakes are typically made using a simple pancake batter recipe, which is then spooned onto a hot griddle or frying pan in small circles.

Once the pancakes are cooked, they are scooped into a bowl and served with a small spoon, just like cereal. Some TikTok users have added toppings like syrup, butter, or fruit to their pancake cereal to enhance the flavour and presentation.

Salmon and rice bowl

 

A salmon and rice bowl meal is made with cooked salmon, rice, and a variety of vegetables and sauces. The recipe typically involves cooking salmon on a hot pan or grill, then serving it over a bed of rice with various toppings and seasonings.

To make a salmon and rice bowl, cooked rice is placed in a bowl or dish, then topped with cooked salmon, avocado, cucumber, edamame beans, sliced radish, and other vegetables. Some variations of the recipe also include toppings like sesame seeds, soy sauce, and other flavourful sauces to enhance the taste of the dish.

Garden focaccia

 

The decorative version of focaccia bread! Garden focaccia is topped with an array of colourful and fresh vegetables and herbs to create the appearance of a garden. The trend involves creating a focaccia dough from scratch, then adding an assortment of vegetables and herbs arranged in an aesthetically.

To make garden focaccia, the focaccia dough is typically prepared by mixing flour, yeast, salt, and water together to create a soft and sticky dough. The dough is then rolled out onto a baking sheet, and various toppings like sliced tomatoes, bell peppers, olives, and fresh herbs are placed on top to create a little doughy garden.

Corn ribs

 

This new world corn on the cob is made by cutting the cob into long, thin strips to create the appearance of “ribs”.  Once your corn cob has been cut into segments, you season them with various herbs and spices, and roast them in the oven or on the grill.

To make corn ribs, the corn is boiled or steamed for a few minutes to partially cook, then cut into segments to resemble ribs. The corn ribs are then brushed with a mixture of olive oil and various seasonings, such as paprika, garlic powder, and chili powder.

3 ingredient ice cream

 

This is a simple and easy way to make homemade ice cream with just three ingredients. The recipe involves blending together heavy cream, sweetened condensed milk, and a flavouring of your choice.

To make it, combine the heavy cream and sweetened condensed milk and whip together until they form a thick and creamy mixture. A flavouring of your choice, such as chocolate chips, fruit puree, or vanilla extract, is then added to the mixture and stirred in gently.

The mixture is then poured into a freezer-safe container and frozen for several hours until it is firm and scoopable. The resulting ice cream is creamy, smooth, and rich in flavour!
