This spicy sweet gluhwein recipe is perfect for autumn and winter entertaining.
125g muscovado sugar
2 cardamom pods
1 cinnamon stick
1 star anise
juice and grated peel of
1 small lemon
sprigs fresh thyme
extra spices, to taste

1. Place the wine and sugar in a heavy-based saucepan.
2. Warm over low heat, stirring frequently until the sugar melts.
3. Add the spices, lemon peel and juice and simmer on low for about 45 minutes.
4. Serve with slices of orange, sprigs of thyme and a variety of extra spices so that guests can customise their drinks.
