Love onion powder as a seasoning for your winter roasts? Minimise food waste and save yourself a buck by making homemade onion powder using your discarded onion peels.

INGREDIENTS

  • 5 cups of loosely packed onion skins (you’ll need approximately 6 medium onions)

INSTRUCTIONS

PREHEAT the oven to 100°C.

ARRANGE 5 cups of loosely packed onion skins on a baking sheet. Place in the oven for 3 hours or, if you have one, use a dehydrator according to the recommended settings. Check regularly until the onion skins have completely dried out.

ONCE the onion skins are dry, crush them by hand.

BLEND the crushed onion skins on high in a blender until they become a fine powder.

STORE the onion powder out of direct sunlight in an airtight jar or container for up to 6 months.

ADD to soups, stews, broths, rice and even bread dough to add mild flavour and nutrition.

A VARIATION you can try is adding salt to make homemade onion salt.

PRO TIP: Keep your onion peels in an airtight container until you have enough for 5 cups. It’s best to use organic onions to ensure that the skins are pesticide free.
