Just because the weather is bleak this should not deter you from gardening. You may be surprised to learn about ways to garden in cold winter weather temperatures. These methods help many gardens maintain their growing and harvesting practices.
Methods for gardening in winter
The right method can go far when gardening in winter. These methods are meant to protect your plants from the winter freezing temperatures.
Cold Frames
Cold frames are essentially boxes with windows that keep the weather out but also allow light and heat in. The windows help the plants stay warmer, maintaining their growth. Some cold frames are built using wood, as this is an easier choice. Wood helps insulate while also letting light through. The main purpose of cold frames is to keep the plants well-insulated and warm.

Row Covers
If you are in a climate zone that doesn’t get too freezing in the winter, you may opt for row covers. They are simple and a less expensive option. Simply put some heavy fabric row covers over your plants in the garden to help protect them from light frosts. Although not as common, row cover fabric can also be used on big indoor plants to help raise insulation levels.
Mulch
Although mulch does a good job of insulating your plants, it won’t necessarily extend the growing season. Yes, it will help retain heat in the soil, which is necessary. When using mulch, use organic mulch that will help provide nutrients for the plants.
Greenhouses
Greenhouses are a great option for winter growing, functioning similarly to cold frames but on a larger scale and often at a higher cost. They require enough space for construction and are typically found in larger gardens. Greenhouses utilise sunlight to keep plants warm and promote continuous growth. Additionally, at night, electricity can be used to generate and maintain heat inside the greenhouse.

The key to growing through the winter months is understanding that the growth has to be complete prior to the cold setting in. You want your plants to reach a harvestable stage just before the complete winter freeze arrives.
