Kitchen design trends come and go, but some styles can quickly make a space feel dated rather than timeless. While there is nothing wrong with choosing a kitchen that reflects your personality, homeowners looking to refresh their space may want to reconsider certain design choices that have lost their appeal. 

From overly busy finishes to impractical layouts, here are some kitchen trends to leave behind when planning your next update. 

Too much matching cabinetry 

A kitchen where every surface, appliance and accessory perfectly matches can sometimes feel overly coordinated. Instead, modern kitchens often benefit from subtle variation. 

Consider combining different textures or materials, such as timber-look cabinetry with stone-inspired worktops, to create more visual interest without making the room feel cluttered. 

Overly ornate cabinets 

Highly decorative cabinet doors, elaborate mouldings and excessive detailing can make a kitchen feel heavy and traditional. 

Simple, streamlined cabinetry tends to create a cleaner appearance and can make smaller kitchens feel more spacious. Shaker-style and flat-panel doors can offer a more timeless alternative. 

Excessive open shelving 

Open shelving can look attractive in photographs, but having too many exposed shelves can become difficult to maintain. Everyday items can quickly create visual clutter, particularly in a busy family kitchen. If you like the look, consider using one or two open shelves as a feature while keeping most storage behind closed doors. 

Appliance overload

When updating your kitchen, think about storage, preparation space, lighting, ventilation, appliance placement and how easily the surfaces can be cleaned. 

You do not have to completely avoid trends when designing a kitchen. The key is to use them selectively.
