How to DIY a hanging moss ball | SA Garden and Home

This DIY succulent moss ball will take your hanging garden to the next level. For the best result, use plants of various colours and shapes.

What you’ll need

Coconut coir
Succulent potting mix
Moss
Solid thread
Binding wire
Secateurs
Solid wire
Pliers and skewers

1 Mix the soil

Place the coconut coir in water to expand and absorb moisture. Squeeze the excess water and mix one part coir with one succulent potting mix. Add about a third of the moss, torn into small pieces. Form a ball out of the mixture, ready for planting.

2 Wrap it up

Cover the ball of soil with moss and fix it in place with thread. Wrap up the ball with wire and leave 10 cm open at the top for hanging. Fasten the end well, wrapping it several times around the hanging point, so the wire does not unwind.

3 Planting

To prepare the succulents, remove all soil from the roots and shorten them with clean secateurs. Make a hole in the ball with a skewer and insert the roots of the succulents. Secure each plant with a piece of wire bent into a U-shape.

4 Final adjustments and suspension

Cover the entire area with plants. Start with larger plants, then fill the soil gaps between them with smaller succulents. Make an eyelet from the end of the binding wire and tie a string to it, ready to hang in an eye-catching area. And voila – your DIY moss ball is ready for display!
