Every decor diva understands the importance of a good candle. I have candles in every room of the house. Soy candles, hand-poured candles, loadshedding candles, romantic tea-light candles and coveted perfume candles from Provence, France. I love them all the same, but my heart has moved on to pining for a different kind of candle: the statue candle.

Focused on form and colour, hand-poured statue candles conjure up more than just the coziness that the conventional candle brings.

Apart from the plethora of unique forms and compelling colours that these ornate statue candles come in, they are really something to treasure, moulded and hand-poured by seasoned candle artisans who practice age-old techniques.

They lean more towards being affordable art objects than they do cozy shelf-fillers. Well, it must be a sin to light one then, no?

I think there’s something beautiful about lighting this sort of candle. You feel engaged in a performance. You look on, hypnotised by the flame and how it melts away the lines and curvature a form once so ornate and untouched, it’s almost symbolic. See what I mean when a say ‘affordable art?’

The real bonus is the fact that most of these candles are affordable, if you know where to find them. If you’re looking for a quirky pop of colour, a hint of Romanesque elegance, or a thought-provoking statement piece, then finding the perfect statue candle should be your next step.

It isn’t easy, though, statue candle artisans are few and far in between locally. Here are the ones I have scouted so far:
