Let’s be honest – no one actually likes cleaning the toilet, but it’s something you definitely want to do properly every time.

If there’s anyone who knows the right way to get a toilet sparkling clean and germ free every time, it’s Domestos (especially since they’ve been on a mission to improve toilets and sanitation at schools across South Africa with their “Cleaner Toilets Brighter Future Programme”. So we spoke to their team of cleaning experts to find out exactly how we should be cleaning our toilets. It turns out we’ve been cleaning our toilets incorrectly this whole time!

Step 1: Get the right toilet-cleaning equipment

You’ll need to have gloves, a toilet brush, your toilet cleaner of choice, some paper towels or other disposable cloths or sponges handy. We think that a great soundtrack also makes a huge difference. It’s best to use a sponge or towel that you can throw away after you use it – you definitely wouldn’t want to re-use a sponge from the toilet on another area of your home.

Step 2: Choose your toilet cleaner

When choosing a toilet cleaner, look for one that:

  • Is easy and quick to apply
  • Can clean the toilet bowl thoroughly and removes stains easily
  • Is formulated to help fight germs
  • Is safe enough to be used every day

Step 3: Clean the outside of the toilet

Put on your gloves (and your favourite song) and grab your cloth. Using only hot water on your cloth, do a first initial clean of the toilet by wiping off any exterior dirt. Then spray the outside parts of the toilet, such as the tank and handle, with toilet cleaner and wipe them clean. Now move on to the toilet lid and the outside parts of the bowl. Don’t be tempted to leave out any bits, even if they appear to be clean – they probably aren’t, since not all dirt and germs will be visible.

Pay special attention to the seat, as this is where people are most likely to come into contact with the toilet; make sure it is extra clean.

Step 4: How to clean the toilet bowl

When it comes to cleaning the inside of the toilet bowl, you should opt for a special toilet cleaner that’s designed to get your toilet bowl shining again while removing stains and mineral deposits. Domestos recommends using a top-down approach when you clean, starting with the toilet rim first. First apply some cleaner to the inside of the rim. Before you start scrubbing with a toilet brush, read the instructions on your cleaner so you know how long you need to wait before moving on to scrubbing the inside of the toilet bowl. Keep in mind that some toilet cleaners might need to soak for a little while.

Once you’ve scrubbed the bowl and under the rim, you’re done! That wasn’t so bad, was it?

Did you know, Domestos is waging a war against poor sanitation by building toilets in local schools? And it’s REALLY easy for you to get involved. All you have to do is to keep choosing Domestos as your toilet germ-killing weapon of choice, and you’ll automatically be helping make the lives of millions of people around the world cleaner, safer and better.
