Come Saturday, the Day of Reconciliation, Greenmarket Square will come alive with the third edition of Unity on the Square featuring traditional dances and some of the Mother City’s top local musicians to usher in the peak festive season.

Aimed at underpinning the special significance of the national day, promoting unity and diversity, as well as celebrating artistry, Unity at the Square has been hailed as tone-setter for the festive season and one of Cape Town’s premier holiday events for families.

A ‘cream of the crop’ lineup of local artists and entertainers including Emo Adams, Youngsta CPT, Jack Parow, Kurt Darren, Early B, Loukmaan Adams, Jimmy Nevis, Paxton Fielies and NV Funk among others are set to entertain the scores of Capetonians and visitors flocking to Greenmarket Square on Saturday, 16 December.

More than just a musical festival, Unity on the Square intends to be a platform for artists to earn a living and serve as a marketplace for traders to showcase their crafts, merchandise and culinary delights.

‘What makes this event more special is that it is aimed at creating opportunities for local artists and the City of Cape Town is proud to partner with an initiative that seeks to revitalise the local performing arts while also providing opportunities for local entrepreneurs,’ said City’s MMC for Safety and Security JP Smith.

This year, Unity on the Square is joining forces with Guga S’Thebe to provide an opportunity for crafters at the Langa-based cultural centre to showcase and sell their work during the event.

Event organiser Shaakirah Adams told Bizcommunity that for the third edition, there’s a significant emphasis on family-freindly activities to ensure that everyone, ‘from the youngest to the oldest’, will find something to enjoy the festival.

‘The entertainment lineup promises to be bigger and better, with a stellar cast of musicians, dancers and performers to keep the energy high throughout the event,’ she added.

City of Cape Town said that Adams will also offer a workshop series to CPUT students on practical knowledge and skills in event management, permit processes, budgeting and securing funding for events.
