Color context

Picking a paint colour for any area of your home is generally a tough decision. Deciding on one for your door is no exception, and there are numerous aspects you need to factor in before you start painting. These include

  • Your home’s architectural elements and aesthetics
  • Is your home a townhouse or a cottage
  • Keeping the design of your home

Preparation is key

Whenever you paint anything, there are essentials you need to consider. These need to be on your shopping list. These are:

  • 65 mm paintbrush
  • Angled paintbrush
  • Drop sheet
  • Masking tape
  • Fine-grit sandpaper
  • Primer
  • Lint-free cloth

Always clean and prep your exterior door before painting to ensure the best possible results. Wipe down with a clean, damp cloth and let it dry. If you’re working with an older door that’s already painted, it’s time to get sanding. Sanding will ensure a suitable surface to which the primer can adhere. Wipe the door with a good lint-free cloth to remove any dust.

Get painting

Place the drop cloth underneath the door and attend to any inset details and trimming with the angled paintbrush before applying the primer. Using the regular paintbrush, use long, smooth strokes to coat the rest of the door. Let it dry completely before repeating these steps with whatever paint colour you have chosen. Add two coats of paint, letting the first layer dry completely before adding the next. Leave the second coat to dry for at least 24 hours before replacing the hardware.
