A dark room can sometimes feel small, dull, or uninviting, especially when it receives little natural sunlight. To curb the situation, you don’t need to undertake any major renovations to make the space feel lighter and more welcoming.
With the right colours, lighting, furniture, and decorative touches, even a naturally dark room can feel brighter.
Choose light, reflective colours
One of the easiest ways to brighten a room is to use lighter colours on the walls. Colours such as white, soft beige, warm cream, pale grey, and light pastel shades can reflect more light around the room.
If an all-white room feels too stark, try considering warm neutrals. These can create a brighter appearance while still making the space feel comfortable and inviting.
Adding mirrors
Mirrors are a simple but effective way to make a dark room appear brighter and more spacious. Position your large mirrors opposite a window or another light source so they can reflect light throughout the room.
You can also use several smaller mirrors as decorative features. Mirrored furniture, glass surfaces, and other reflective materials can have a similar effect.

Layer your lighting
A single ceiling light may not be enough to brighten a dark room. Instead, use several light sources at different levels.
Combine ceiling fixtures with table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights, or LED accent lighting. Layered lighting helps eliminate dark corners and gives you greater control over the atmosphere.
Keep windows uncovered
Heavy curtains and dark blinds can make an already dim space feel even darker. Where possible, you need to replace them with lightweight curtains or blinds that allow natural light to enter.
Make sure to keep window areas free from bulky furniture and unnecessary decorations. Even small amounts of daylight can make a noticeable difference in the room.
Using light-coloured furniture
Furniture takes up a large amount of visual space, so its colour can have a significant impact on how bright a room feels. Consider couches, chairs, cabinets, and beds in lighter shades.
If you already have dark furniture, you need to balance it with lighter cushions, throws, rugs, and accessories.
