There’s nothing more frustrating than peeling the label off a glass jar, only to be left with a sticky patch that seems impossible to remove. Whether you’re reusing pasta sauce jars for pantry storage, turning candle jars into planters or giving old containers a second life, stubborn sticker residue can quickly spoil the finished look.

You don’t need harsh chemicals or endless scrubbing. These simple methods will help remove stickers from glass jars and containers without damaging the surface.

Start with warm, soapy water

For most jars, this is the easiest place to begin. Fill a bowl or your sink with warm water and a generous squeeze of dishwashing liquid, then leave the jar to soak for 15 to 30 minutes. Once the adhesive softens, peel the label away slowly. Any leftover residue can often be rubbed off with a soft cloth or your fingers.

Break down sticky residue with cooking oil

If the label comes away but the glue stays behind, a little cooking oil can help. Rub a small amount of olive, sunflower or vegetable oil onto the sticky area and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes. The oil helps loosen the adhesive, making it much easier to wipe away. Wash the jar with warm, soapy water afterwards to remove any oily residue.

Try white vinegar

White vinegar is another handy household solution for removing stubborn sticker residue. Warm a little vinegar, soak a cloth or paper towel, then place it over the sticker for around 10 minutes. The mild acidity helps soften the glue, making the label easier to remove without leaving an oily finish.

Make a gentle scrubbing paste

For particularly stubborn spots, mix bicarbonate of soda with a little cooking oil to form a paste. Gently rub it onto the adhesive using a soft cloth or sponge. The paste provides just enough abrasion to lift the residue without scratching most glass or hard plastic surfaces.

Use a hairdryer

Heat is one of the quickest ways to loosen stubborn adhesives. Hold a hairdryer on a medium setting a few centimetres from the label for 30 to 60 seconds. While the glue is still warm, slowly peel the sticker away.

Reach for rubbing alcohol

When nothing else works, rubbing alcohol or surgical spirits can dissolve stubborn adhesive in minutes. Apply a small amount to a cloth or cotton pad and gently rub the residue until it lifts away. Test it on an inconspicuous area first if you’re working with painted, varnished or delicate plastic surfaces.

Avoid scratching the surface

It might be tempting to grab a knife or metal scourer, but these can easily leave permanent scratches. Instead, use a plastic scraper, an old bank card or even your fingernail to gently lift softened adhesive without damaging the glass.

Give your jars a new purpose

Once they’re clean, old glass jars are ready for a second life. Use them to organise pantry staples, display fresh flowers, store bathroom essentials, keep craft supplies tidy or propagate plant cuttings. It’s a simple way to reduce waste while adding practical storage around your home.
