Weevils are small, long-snouted beetles that colonise dry grain products and can establish a significant pantry infestation before most people notice them. They are not dangerous, they do not bite and they do not transmit disease, but they render affected food unusable and spread quickly once established. Identifying the problem early and responding methodically removes them efficiently.

What pantry weevils actually are

The three species most commonly found in domestic pantries are the rice weevil, the granary weevil and the maize weevil. In South Africa, all three are encountered, with maize weevils particularly prevalent given the country’s warm climate and high consumption of maize products. Rice weevils are reddish-brown with four lighter spots and can fly. Granary weevils are shinier, cannot fly and tend toward cooler environments. Maize weevils closely resemble rice weevils and are most common in warmer regions.

All three feed primarily on whole grain seeds rather than on flour or processed grain products. They lay eggs by boring a small hole into an individual grain and depositing a single egg inside, which develops entirely within the seed. This hidden lifecycle means an infestation can reach significant numbers before any adult insects are visible.

Signs of weevil infestation

The first sign is often the discovery of small, dark brown beetles in or near grain product containers. Other indicators include empty seed husks in stored grain, a fine dusty residue in the bottom of containers from seeds that have been hollowed out, and grain that appears unusually dry or clumped. Pouring a grain product into water will float any hollowed seeds to the surface, which can reveal the scale of an infestation in a product that looks intact from the outside.

How to clear an infestation

The first step is disposal. Any open or unsealed container of grain product where weevil activity has been observed or suspected should be sealed and discarded immediately. Check every nearby container, including those that appear undamaged. Cardboard packaging without an intact inner lining is not a reliable barrier against weevils that have already entered the storage area.

Apply heat or cold to any product you want to salvage rather than discard. Heating the product to at least 60 degrees Celsius for a minimum of 15 minutes kills adult weevils, eggs, larvae and pupae. Alternatively, freezing the product at minus 18 degrees Celsius or below for three days achieves the same result. Many people routinely freeze grain purchases for four days upon bringing them home, which kills any weevils that may have been present in commercial packaging before they have the chance to establish.

After removing and disposing of all suspect food, empty the affected storage area completely and vacuum it thoroughly, including corners, shelf edges and any crevices. Follow with a wash using hot soapy water or a diluted vinegar solution, which kills any adult insects that the vacuum missed. Clean individual cans, glass jars and containers before returning them.

Natural deterrents

Bay leaves placed inside or alongside grain product containers are a well-established natural deterrent. Research has confirmed that bay leaf compounds are effective at repelling weevils and other pantry pests. A single dried bay leaf placed inside a bag of flour, rice or oats does not affect the flavour of the product but significantly reduces the appeal of the container as a habitat.

Food-grade diatomaceous earth scattered thinly along pantry shelf edges deters weevils through mechanical rather than chemical action. Sticky traps placed in pantry corners capture adult insects and provide an ongoing indicator of whether activity is continuing after a clear-out.

Preventing reinfestation

Transfer grain products from their original packaging into sealed glass or hard plastic containers as soon as they come into the house. Weevils cannot penetrate intact, sealed hard containers, which breaks the cycle of infestation from one product to the next. Keep storage areas dry and clean of crumbs and spilt grain, and avoid accumulating old or part-used packages over extended periods. Never add new grain product to a container that has not been thoroughly cleaned first.
