Oven knobs are small, but they carry big kitchen energy – and even bigger mess. Think oil splatters, buttery fingerprints, and that mysterious sticky layer that seems to appear out of nowhere.

The fix? A quick, no-fuss routine that brings them back to clean, glossy life in minutes.

Here’s how to do it properly, step by step.

Step 1: Make sure everything is off

Safety first, always. Check that your oven and stove are completely switched off and cool to the touch. You don’t want any surprises while you’re mid-clean.

Step 2: Remove the knobs (if possible)

Most oven knobs pop off with a gentle pull or light twist. Don’t force them – they should come away easily. If you’re unsure, a quick glance at your appliance manual helps avoid any accidental damage.

Step 3: Soak away the grime

Place the removed knobs in a bowl of warm water with a small squirt of mild dishwashing liquid.

Let them soak for about 10 – 15 minutes. This is where the magic happens – grease softens, sticky residue loosens, and you do less scrubbing later (always a win).

Step 4: Give them a gentle clean

Use a soft sponge or cloth to wipe each knob clean. Focus on the edges and grooves where grime likes to hide like it pays rent. For stubborn spots, an old toothbrush works beautifully to lift buildup without scratching.

Step 5: Rinse and dry properly

Rinse each knob under clean water to remove any soap residue.

Then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Don’t rush this part – moisture left behind can cause issues once they’re back in place.

Step 6: Clean underneath the knobs

While the knobs are off, take the opportunity to wipe the panel behind them.

A cloth lightly dampened with mild cleaner will lift any hidden grease that’s been quietly building up.

Step 7: Reattach and align

Once everything is completely dry, pop the knobs back into place. Make sure they’re aligned correctly so you’re not accidentally turning on the grill when you meant to switch on a hob.

If your knobs don’t come off

No removal? No problem.

Spray a gentle all-purpose cleaner onto a cloth (not directly onto the stove) and wipe each knob carefully. Use a cotton bud to get into tight corners and around the base where grime gathers.

Finish with a clean, damp cloth and dry well.

What to avoid

Keep things gentle. Harsh cleaners like bleach or abrasive scrubbers can fade the markings and dull the finish. Think soft cloths, mild soap, and light pressure – not elbow grease warfare.

Because sometimes the smallest details, like clean oven knobs, are what make a kitchen feel properly cared for again.
