Nature has equipped plants with various adaptations to conserve water. Incorporating succulents into your garden can help save water. Consider planting these succulents to become water-saving champions.

Aloe

We cannot talk about succulents and not mention the aloe. Widely known for their medical properties, aloe vera succulents are common succulents in many South African gardens. There are a bunch of different varieties to choose from. All these species need bright natural light, so your garden needs to provide ample lighting, ideally not direct sunlight. Depending on what you are looking for, it is a great succulent for the inside or outside of your home.

The spekboom

The South African Spekboom. Hugely popular shrub that can grow to a small tree in the right conditions. These plants offer delicate pale green leaves perched on red stems that mature to grey. The leaves are also edible. Spekbooms come in a few forms, from upright to sprawling, and some varieties have pale, almost golden leaves. Whatever variety you are growing, it will help contribute to you being a water-wise gardener.

Echeveria

These beautiful succulents form beautiful rosettes in a huge variety of colours and shapes. These attractive succulents are so easy to grow in a pot or in a garden bed. There are endless options for Echeveria to choose from.  Colours range from blue, grey, purple, and even variegated varieties. Echeveria is drought-tolerant, thrives in well-draining soil, and requires minimal maintenance, making it the perfect succulent for any garden.

Green Pinwheel or Aeonium

Beautiful bushy succulents are perfect as groundcovers. While this variety of Aeonium may be drought-tolerant, it does, however, require a bit more water than other succulents, due to its shallow root system. One of their remarkable characteristics is their ability to adapt to various garden arrangements, creating a lush, full appearance in any garden.

Crassula

Often the most easily recognised and most popular succulent around, due to the different colours, sizes and rosettes.  These succulents are perfect in any area of the home. There are over 200 Crassula species, but the most popular garden Crassulas in the country are the jade plant succulents. The money trees, worm plants and watch chains are just some of the different Crassula you find out there.
