Your bathroom might look like something out of a glossy spread, but behind the curated calm could be a few quietly unhygienic habits. Yes, even the pretty ones. While décor is meant to elevate your space, some choices do the opposite – inviting moisture, mould, and bacteria to settle right in.

Before you give your bathroom a mini makeover, here are a few design details worth rethinking.

Towels perched above the toilet

It’s a look – neatly folded towels stacked above the loo, ready for guests. But every flush (especially with the lid up) releases microscopic droplets into the air. Not exactly what you want settling into your fresh hand towels.

A better move? Keep towels closer to the basin, where they’re easy to reach and far from any airborne surprises.

Fabric toilet seat covers

Soft, plush, and… a little problematic. Fabric covers hold onto warmth and moisture, which creates the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive. They’re also tricky to clean properly, which means they rarely get as fresh as they should.

Stick to smooth, sealed surfaces instead – they’re far easier to wipe down and keep hygienic.

Overly thick bath mats

That cloud-like bath mat may feel luxurious underfoot, but thicker materials – like memory foam – tend to trap moisture. And when something stays damp for too long, mould isn’t far behind.

Opt for lighter, machine-washable options like cotton or microfiber. They dry quicker and can handle regular spins in the washing machine.

Décor that can’t handle humidity

Bathrooms are naturally humid spaces, which means not all décor is up to the task. Unsealed wood, clay ornaments, and other porous materials absorb moisture, making them a breeding ground for mildew.

Instead, lean into materials that are easy to clean and moisture-resistant – think glass, metal, ceramic, or sealed finishes.

Art that isn’t bathroom-friendly

Artwork adds personality, but not all pieces belong in a steamy setting. Paper prints and canvas can warp over time, and trapped moisture (even behind frames) can lead to hidden mould.

If you’re styling your walls, choose sealed or waterproof pieces that can stand up to humidity without losing their charm.

Soap dishes without drainage

That vintage dish you picked up at a market? Beautiful. Practical? Not always. When bar soap sits in a puddle of water, it becomes a soft, slippery breeding ground for bacteria.

Look for a soap dish with drainage holes – or swap to a liquid dispenser for a cleaner, fuss-free option.
