Your houseplant leaves can build up dust particles over time. This means care needs to be observed when dealing with them, and not even a good dusting will be able to eliminate all the particles clogging the plant’s stomata. To remove all dirt and debris, you need to give your plants attention. You do this to avoid unwanted diseases or lurking insects. At this time of the year, when the days are beginning to lengthen, there are a few things you could do to make them happier.

How to treat your plants to a spa day

Quick refreshing shower

Houseplants absorb much of the dust surrounding them. It’s one of the reasons why they are so good for your health. Dust is, in fact, one of their main sources of minerals. When dust and dirt accumulate on a plant’s leaves, they can clog the breathing pores, which reduces the plant’s efficiency in functioning. This is why houseplants benefit from an occasional shower, especially after a long time without one. Make sure to give your plants a thorough shower! Simply place your plants in a bath and gently wash both sides of the leaves with cool water to remove any dust. Use a soft cloth to remove those stubborn dirt particles.

Repot

After a year or some years in the same pot, most houseplants are ripe for repotting. This is when it’s time to remove the plants from their pots and discard part of the old soil mix. If you want the plants to grow in size, repot them into a larger pot. If you want to slow its growth, repot it into a pot of the same size. Before reusing the same pot, clean it thoroughly. You’ll also need fresh organic potting mix to get the best nutrients.

Feed the houseplants lightly

Most houseplants don’t need any feeding during their dormant period. Well, spring and summer are good times to start feeding again. Every houseplant owner has their own preferred fertilisers and fertilisation frequency. Minerals from the appropriate fertiliser are essential for houseplants’ growth.

Good light placement

To maintain good symmetry, your houseplant needs to receive light from all sides. This is rarely the case indoors, where all the light in a room comes from one direction. Most houseplants tend to lean towards the only source of light. To compensate for this, it is key to give the plants a turn clockwise with every pampering. That will give it light from all directions, therefore better symmetry on your plants.
