New decor store in Durban

Contributing decor editor Candice Botha discovers a new decor store at La Lucia Mall: Ecru

La Lucia Mall is my local. It’s where I do my grocery shopping, I know all the men and women in the decor stores by name and I need to set aside at least an hour when I visit as I’m guaranteed to bump into a series of acquaintances. Most of these ‘acquaintances’ have already asked if I’ve seen the latest addition to the mall – a gorgeous decor store called Ecru.

I certainly haven’t failed to spot the new kid on the block; in fact I’ve had difficulty containing my excitement ever since spotting the exterior signage a week or two ago.

Those hopes have certainly not been dashed now that Ecru has opened its doors. With its black walls, warm wooden floors, copper and rust accents and verdant vertical garden, it’s a truly beautiful space. Owner Greg Canciani has created an emporium of homeware, accessories, jewellery, body products and fine food items all sourced from South African designers.

I was delighted to note some of my favourites: SketchBok/DBN’s glorious Hex Table in copper with their Stitched Lamp presiding over it; Love Milo’s quirky ceramics; cushions in Skinny laMinx fabrics; Thandana’s leather bags and Xavier Clarisse’s covetable light fittings.

“I’ve had a lifelong passion for design and have always enjoyed working with my hands,” says Greg, who not only designed the interiors of the store but several of the pieces inside it. He cites designer friends like Xavier as the inspiration to pursue his own creative projects as well as open a shop to showcase those of others. “I firmly believe in upcycling,” he adds. “Taking something old and neglected and reviving it is really satisfying.” He’s put this philosophy into practise in the store which boasts several updated vintage pieces that give the very contemporary space a classic touch. The store is a pleasure to visit whether you’re buying or simply browsing.
