Fine Living

Editor Mary Jane Harris was bowled over by interior designer David Muirhead’s fabulous new venture – Fine Living – a retail and event destination in Parkmore, Johannesburg

It was at a party at his ultra-stylish Parkmore home in December last year that interior designer David Muirhead mentioned he was busy with a new project. He’d spotted a gap in the market for a chic private venue that felt like a glamorous home yet was flexible enough to host a birthday or anniversary party (or even a small corporate function) right in the heart of Sandton.

In partnership with his sister, Mandy, and brother-in-law, Ian Groves, and with himself as the client, he’s had a great deal of fun transforming an old building and creating exciting spaces.

There’s ‘The Westwood’ featuring a sexy striped bar and a striking Vivienne Westwood tartan wallpaper. ‘The Boardroom’ seats 14 and is opulently finished with wallpaper and smoky mirrors. ‘The Ballroom’, with pretty striped walls, can easily be visualised as the setting for an intimate wedding or chic 40th and finally, a beautiful courtyard just perfect for cocktails on a sultry summer evening.

Best of all, Fine Living is not affiliated to any particular caterer so you can bring in your favourite chef or event company AND choose your own flower designer and music.

In addition to all this there’s the David Muirhead & Associates showroom where his signature style of comfortable, liveable glamour is shown off by a collection of furniture groupings, accessories and art – all of which is for sale at surprisingly reasonable prices. David explains that he’s combined pieces by established artists with work from those who are up and coming to create an edgy vibe.

The showroom is always changing and there’s something new to look at every time you visit. As a fan of black and white and smart urban designs, like checks and houndstooth, I’ve always loved David’s style and was interested to see that in the showroom he’s also used a lot of navy and indigo in a sophisticated yet relaxed way.

The showroom is open seven days a week and manned by friendly, knowledgeable staff. You can pop in over the weekend for inspiration and, fortunately, there’s plenty of secure parking in front – but be aware that the function rooms are only open when booked for an occasion.

Cheers,
Mary Jane
