Aphelandra squarrosa earns its common name without effort. The glossy, dark green leaves with their bold ivory lateral veins produce a graphic striped effect that is immediately arresting, and when the plant is in flower, the dense, cone-shaped golden-yellow bracts it produces are among the most dramatic blooms available from any houseplant. Its reputation for difficulty is equally well-earned. The zebra plant is demanding in specific ways that, once understood, are entirely manageable. Ignored, those same requirements produce the rapid leaf drop that gives it a discouraging track record with first-time owners.

Light

Zebra plants need bright, indirect light to maintain their characteristic leaf colouring and to sustain the energy required for flowering. Direct sun burns the foliage; too little light produces dull, less defined patterning and prevents flowering altogether. A position near an east-facing or north-facing window, where the plant receives strong ambient light without the direct sun of a south- or west-facing aspect, is generally appropriate. Rotate the pot every two weeks to prevent the plant from leaning toward the light source.

Watering

Consistency is the non-negotiable principle of zebra plant care. The soil should be kept evenly moist during the growing season, never allowed to dry out completely and never left waterlogged. The plant is sensitive at both extremes: dry soil causes leaf drop within days; saturated soil causes root rot that is difficult to reverse. Check soil moisture every two to three days and water when the top centimetre feels barely dry to the touch.

Water quality matters. Zebra plants are sensitive to the fluoride and chlorine present in most municipal tap water. Using collected rainwater, filtered water, or tap water left to stand uncovered for 24 hours before use reduces the leaf tip browning that fluoride exposure causes over time.

Humidity: the most common reason zebra plants fail

The zebra plant’s origin in the tropical rainforests of Brazil gives a clear indication of what it needs: high humidity, consistently above 50 percent relative humidity and ideally closer to 60 to 70 percent. Most South African homes, particularly in winter when indoor heating reduces ambient humidity significantly, fall well below this threshold. This is the gap between a zebra plant that thrives and one that drops its leaves in stages.

Practical approaches include: placing the pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water, ensuring the pot base sits above the waterline to prevent root rot; grouping the zebra plant with other humidity-loving species to create a localised higher-humidity microclimate; or using a humidifier positioned nearby. Regular misting of the leaves with room-temperature water provides a temporary humidity boost but is less effective as a standalone measure than the approaches above.

Temperature

Zebra plants prefer temperatures between 18 and 27 degrees Celsius and are damaged by cold draughts, sudden temperature changes or proximity to air conditioning vents. On the Highveld in winter, where overnight temperatures can drop sharply and indoor heating creates warm-by-day, cool-at-night fluctuations, position the plant away from exterior walls and windows that are opened regularly. A consistent indoor temperature with minimal fluctuation is significantly more important than the precise degree value.

Soil and potting

A well-draining, peat-based potting mix improved with perlite or coir provides the balance of moisture retention and drainage the zebra plant needs. Repot annually in spring, moving to a container one size larger as the roots begin to fill the existing pot. The plant does not like being over-potted: a container significantly larger than the root mass retains excess moisture and increases root rot risk.

Feeding

During the growing season from October through March in South Africa, feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half the recommended strength every two to three weeks. Overfeeding causes salt build-up in the soil, which compounds the fluoride sensitivity the plant already has. Reduce feeding to once per month in winter as growth slows.

Flowering and aftercare

The flower bracts, striking golden-yellow structures that can last four to six weeks, are one of the plant’s most rewarding features and most challenging moments to navigate. Once the bracts fade, the plant often drops its lower leaves as it redirects energy. Remove the spent flower stalk back to the first set of healthy leaves to encourage the plant to produce side shoots rather than simply declining. This pruning stage is where many growers lose confidence: the post-flowering plant looks worse before it looks better, but lateral shoots from the pruned stem typically appear within four to six weeks.

Common problems

Leaf drop is the most alarming and most common complaint. It is caused by cold draughts, sudden temperature change, inconsistent watering or critically low humidity. Address the most likely environmental cause first before assuming disease or pest damage. Brown, crispy leaf tips indicate low humidity or fluoride sensitivity. Yellowing leaves, particularly of the lower leaves, generally indicate overwatering. Limp, wilting leaves on moist soil suggest root rot, which requires removing the plant from its pot, trimming damaged roots and repotting into fresh dry mix.
