Growing plants in containers and pots is an easy way to make the most of small garden spaces. Plants with unique foliage, texture, and/or fragrance can be used to enliven your balconies and offer a bright burst of colour.  

Fragrant plants for pots are especially popular, as they can add greatly to the overall sensory experience of a space. 

Here are some night-scented container plants worth considering for your balcony: 

Night-blooming jasmine

Night-blooming jasmine is famous for its powerful fragrance after dark. Its small, pale flowers may look understated during the day, but their scent can fill a balcony in the evening. It grows well in containers and can be pruned to keep its size manageable.

Lavender 

Although lavender plants are better known for their daytime fragrance, their aromatic leaves can mean your balcony can remain pleasantly scented into the evening. It is particularly suitable for sunny balconies and does well in containers with excellent drainage. 

Gardenia 

Prized for their intensely fragrant white flowers, gardenia scents are enjoyable during warm evenings. They can be grown in containers, although they require more attention than some of the other plants on this list; they still pack a good punch of fragrance at night.

Angel’s trumpet 

Angel’s trumpet plants produce large, pendulous flowers with a strong fragrance that are most noticeable in the evening. These plants can make a dramatic statement in a large container but will need considerable space and care. One thing to note is that all parts of the plant are poisonous if eaten, so the angel trumpet should be kept away from children and pets. 

Growing these plants in containers makes it possible to enjoy their fragrance even if you live in an apartment with limited outdoor space.
