Vertical gardening is known for its affordable, relatively easy way of growing veggies. Easy to set up, it helps expand your home garden space while making gardening easier.

What is vertical gardening?

Vertical gardening involves growing plants upwards instead of allowing them to ramble around on the ground. There are many different vertical gardening systems, and each variety can help reduce the footprint of the plants and expand the number of plants that can be grown in a smaller space. From fruits to herbs and veggies, all can be produced healthier with vertical gardens.

How to DIY your vertical garden

Materials you’ll need

This depends on the style you are going for with your vertical garden.

Steps to follow

  1. Be sure that your wooden pallets are clean and safe to use. Sand them down with sandpaper for any sharp edges or splinters.
  2. If you decide to paint your palette or pots, do it at this stage. Make sure to seal the wood with varnish and let everything dry before moving on to the next step.
  3. Screw a few holes near the centre of each jubilee clip and screw them into the wood in whichever arrangement you’d like your pots to hang.
  4. Close the jubilee clips so that they hold the pots about halfway down their length.
  5. Use these pots to plant plants of your choice.
  6. Be sure to water and care for them as they grow.

The nice thing about vertical gardens is that they offer variety. Climbing flowers such as clematis, honeysuckle, and jasmine can create an amazing scent for your vertical garden. These flowers are loved by many insects, offering an abundance of wildlife in your garden.
