Plant lovers can shop for bonsai, succulents, orchids and unusual plants at the Houghton Bonsai, Succulent & Plant Show at Killarney Mall from 30 October to 1 November 2026. The free-entry event will feature 58 exhibitors, a Bonsai Hospital offering plant-care advice, live music and activities for children.

Now in its fourth year, the Houghton Bonsai, Succulent & Plant Show is returning to Johannesburg with its largest line-up yet. Almost 60 growers, exhibitors and vendors will gather at Killarney Mall, giving visitors the opportunity to browse a wide variety of plants, speak directly to growers and get advice on caring for their collections.

Whether you’re an experienced bonsai enthusiast, a succulent collector or simply looking for a new addition to your indoor garden, the three-day show offers plenty to browse. The event has also attracted recognition, winning a Bronze Award at the 2022 SACSC Footprint Marketing Awards.

Get expert advice at the free Bonsai Hospital

Struggling to keep a plant healthy? Bring it along to the free Bonsai Hospital, where bonsai expert Tommy Ramiah will offer advice on identifying problems and improving plant care.

The service is an opportunity to ask questions about plants that aren’t thriving and get practical guidance from someone with specialist knowledge. If you’ve been trying to work out why a plant is struggling, this could be a useful stop during your visit.

The show brings together growers and vendors offering a range of plants, from carefully cultivated bonsai to succulents, orchids and other varieties.

Buying directly from growers also gives visitors the chance to ask questions about their purchases, including the growing conditions and care each plant needs. For collectors, it’s an opportunity to browse beyond the usual garden-centre selection, while first-time buyers can get advice before taking a new plant home.

Wine, bubbly and deli stalls will also be available, and visitors can stop at one of Killarney Mall’s restaurants or takeaways for a meal.

Live music and free kids’ activities

The Houghton Bonsai, Succulent & Plant Show is also catering for families, with a free Kids’ Zone operating on Saturday, 31 October, and Sunday, 1 November.

Located in the former Exclusive Books space, the Kids’ Zone will offer face painting, balloon sculpting, a soft play area, a Bubble House and succulent cake crafts.

The Science Guy will host Bright Sparks Workshops on both days at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00, giving children the chance to take part in science-themed activities.

There will be live music throughout the weekend, too. A saxophonist is scheduled to perform on Saturday, followed by live grand piano sessions on Sunday.

“Every year more people tell us the show is the highlight of their plant calendar. Fifty-eight vendors is a big milestone for us, and we want families to come and enjoy it together,” says Elesha Stewart, Marketing Manager at Killarney Mall.
