Low-maintenance was key when interior designer Lulu Ridgway created a pet- and child-friendly patio for this family home in Kommetjie

As a family with two young boys, many pets and a home in a coastal setting, Lulu Ridgway of Lu’Nique Interior & Design had to come up with a design for their patio that would be both practical and stylish.

Lulu explains: “The family wanted a relaxed, low-maintenance summery outdoor living and entertaining area with vibrant colours, maximum seating, as well as durable pet-, child- and weather-friendly finishes.”

Lulu’s easy-living design elements:

  1. All the outdoor fabrics are easy to clean and have excellent UV-, stain-resistant and weathering qualities.
  2. Thanks to an aluminium subframe the furniture can’t rust. The artificial wicker has anti-corrosion and UV-resistant qualities.
  3. The round daybed is on wheels making it hassle-free to move in or out of the sun. It also rotates on its base.
  4. The coffee table’s glass top is steady, durable and hygienic.
  5. The sheer polyester curtains are easily removable, washable, and all components are made from marine grade stainless steel.
