Adding a furry friend to your family is always exciting, but there is plenty of preparation to do before bringing a new pet. Following the right tips to prep your new furry friends is key.

Put away fragile items.

Store any glass or breakable items, regardless of their value, as these can pose a hazard to new, excited pets. Child-proofing measures also apply to most domesticated animals. Be mindful of small objects that can be choking hazards for young pets. Ensure that all fragile items are safely put away. If you’re unable to store certain items, consider designating specific rooms as off-limits for pets.

Purchase safe pet supplies.

Purchasing essentials like food, a bed, and toys before bringing your pet home is key. This allows you to be fully prepared. When getting a little dog, get a collar, a leash, a harness and blankets. For a cat, get kitty litter and a box. Make sure the space is safe with a bed, crate, or cosy spot with blankets where your pet can feel secure. The space needs to allow the pets to acclimate to their new home, reducing stress and anxiety.

Avoid toxic plants and chemicals.

Some houseplants can be extremely toxic to your cats and dogs. Many homes contain items that could be harmful to pets. Getting a new pet is a great opportunity to redecorate with non-toxic plants and stock up on chemical-free products to help prevent your pets from getting sick. If you must use strong chemicals, ensure that you store them in a place where your pet cannot access them.

Furniture covers

Sofas are prone to damage from pet scratches and stains, so it’s crucial to take precautions. Consider using non-scratch pads on your furniture to protect it from your cats. Adding slipcovers or washable throws can help prevent permanent stains. While rugs can protect your floors, they may also attract your pet’s attention.
