Spring is the ideal time to rejuvenate your home, get your garden ready for the growing season, and address any small maintenance tasks that may have been neglected during the colder months.
A bit of preparation now can enhance your home’s comfort and promote a healthier garden throughout the season.
Clear away winter debris
Start by removing fallen leaves around your lawn or your garden, and other dead plants, broken branches and other debris that has collected over winter. Clear pathways, flower beds and garden borders so you can see what needs attention.
Avoid rushing to remove every piece of natural material, however. Some leaves and plant debris can provide shelter for beneficial insects and wildlife.

Inspect the roof and gutters
Look for missing or damaged roof tiles, blocked gutters, loose fittings and signs of water damage. Gutters should be cleared of leaves and debris so rain can drain properly. If a roof inspection requires climbing or working at height, consider using a professional rather than taking unnecessary risks.
Give your home a thorough clean
Spring cleaning doesn’t have to mean cleaning the entire house in one weekend. Work room by room and concentrate on areas that are often forgotten.
Dust light fittings, ceiling fans, skirting boards and behind furniture. Wash curtains where appropriate and clean windows to let more natural light into your home.
Inspect your garden equipment
Check your lawnmowers, hose pipes, sprinklers and hand tools before you need them regularly.
Clean and sharpen appropriate cutting tools, inspect electrical equipment for damage and replace worn-out items. If you use petrol-powered equipment, make sure it is serviced according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Test safety equipment
Spring is a good reminder to check smoke alarms and your home alarms where applicable. Test each device and replace batteries or the unit itself according to the manufacturer’s instructions. It’s also worth checking your fire extinguisher, first-aid kit and emergency supplies.
Refresh outdoor living spaces
Clean patios, balconies, decks and outdoor furniture. Wash cushions and inspect furniture for loose parts, rust or damage. If you have a braai grill or outdoor cooking area, give it a thorough clean and check that everything is safe and ready for use.
