Houseplant containers can easily start to look tired, dusty or out of place as plants grow and home décor changes. Refreshing them does not always mean buying new pots. 

With a little cleaning, creativity and care, you can give your plant containers a fresh look while creating a healthier environment for your plants. 

Clean the containers thoroughly

Start by removing the plant and any loose soil from the container. Wash the pot with warm, soapy water to remove dust, mineral deposits and old soil. For stubborn marks, gently scrub the surface with a soft brush. 

If you are reusing a container after a plant has died or suffered from a pest or disease problem, clean and disinfect it appropriately before planting something new. 

Give plain pots a makeover

A simple pot can become a decorative feature with a fresh coat of suitable paint. Choose colours that complement your room, or try patterns, stripes or a minimalist finish. 

Always choose a paint appropriate for the container’s material and allow it to dry completely before bringing it back into use. 

Refresh the soil 

Sometimes the container looks fine, but the growing medium has become compacted or depleted. Depending on the plant, replacing some or all the old potting mix can give it a fresh start. 

Avoid using ordinary garden soil for most indoor plants, as it can be too dense and may introduce pests. Use a quality potting mix suited to the plant.

Check the drainage 

Good drainage is essential for most houseplants. Check that the container has an appropriate drainage hole and that it is not blocked by compacted soil or debris. 

If you are using a decorative cover pot without a drainage hole, keep the plant in a suitable nursery pot inside it. This makes watering and drainage easier to manage. 

Rearrange your plants 

A container can look completely different simply by changing where it sits. Move plants closer to a suitable light source, group different heights together or place a statement plant where it can become a focal point. 

Remember that decorative changes should not come at the expense of the plant’s lighting, temperature or watering requirements.

Refresh the finishing touches

Remove dead leaves, wipe dust from broad leaves and trim damaged growth where appropriate. Cleaning the plant itself can make an old container look much better.
