Your washing machine works hard behind the scenes, but it needs a little care too. Over time, detergent residue, mineral-rich water and trapped moisture can leave your washer smelling less than fresh.

The good news? A deep clean doesn’t require harsh chemicals or fancy products. Two pantry staples are all it takes to get things back on track.

A regular refresh helps your machine run better, keeps laundry cleaner and prevents lingering odours. It’s a small home habit that makes a noticeable difference.

Why vinegar and baking soda work so well

White vinegar cuts through buildup caused by washing powder and hard water, while also tackling mould and mildew. Baking soda lifts smells and gently loosens grime without damaging the drum. Used together, they leave your washing machine clean, fresh and ready for the next load.

How often should you clean your washer?

Front loaders benefit from a monthly clean, while top loaders can be refreshed every second month. If you wash frequently or live in a hard-water area, a little extra attention won’t hurt.

What you’ll need

  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • A soft cloth or sponge
  • An old toothbrush (optional)

For front-loading machines

  1. Make sure the machine is empty.
  2. Wipe the rubber seal around the door using a cloth dipped in diluted vinegar. Pay attention to the folds where moisture collects.
  3. Sprinkle half a cup of baking soda straight into the drum.
  4. Pour two cups of white vinegar into the detergent drawer or drum.
  5. Run a hot wash cycle.
  6. Once finished, wipe the inside and door dry.
  7. Leave the door slightly open to air out.

Tip: This simple step helps prevent mould from returning.

For top-loading machines

  1. Start with an empty drum.
  2. Fill the machine with hot water and pause the cycle.
  3. Add four cups of white vinegar and let it soak for an hour.
  4. Sprinkle in one cup of baking soda.
  5. Restart the cycle and allow it to complete.
  6. Wipe the drum and agitator with a cloth.
  7. Run a short hot rinse if needed.
  8. Leave the lid open once done.

Don’t forget the small details

Detergent drawers and filters can trap residue too. A quick rinse and wipe every few weeks keeps everything in good working order.

When cleaning isn’t enough

If smells persist, water doesn’t drain properly or the machine starts making odd noises, it may be time to call in a professional. These signs usually point to issues beyond everyday maintenance.

A naturally clean washing machine not only smells better but lasts longer too. With vinegar and baking soda on hand, this easy routine fits neatly into a calm, considered home.
