Warm weather brings all kinds of fun back into our lives, from trips to the beach and outdoor entertaining spent lounging by the pool. But one of the things people are not looking forward to is mosquitoes. These pests don’t just leave you with red, itchy bumps, but are also vectors of numerous diseases. Controlling mosquitoes on your property will limit your mosquito exposure. Here are five mistakes that can make your outdoor space a mosquito haven.
Using the wrong lightbulbs
Something so small can contribute to the rise of mosquitoes in your yard. Using the wrong lightbulb outside your patio can have an impact on whether mosquitoes congregate on your balcony or not. The lights you choose are more significant than you know. You should consider switching to LED lights, as cool white light attracts fewer mosquitoes compared to warm yellow lights.
Standing water
You might not even be aware of this, but standing water is your worst enemy when it comes to mosquitoes. Mosquito pests rely on standing bodies of water to breed and multiply. This is not limited to just large ponds or birdbaths, but any pool of water in and around your patio. Small amounts of standing water in your yard and around your patio, even a clogged gutter, may contribute. The basic solution would be to eliminate standing water wherever you find it in and around your balcony.
Leaving out food
Mosquitoes are attracted to sweet smells. Homeowners need to keep food covered outside. You can ensure proper disposal of any leftovers in a covered compost bin. Cleaning up after outdoor meals will help keep your space tidy and mosquito-free.
Overwatering your plants
Overwatering your plants is never a good idea because of root rot. Besides root rot, overwatered plants can actually make your space more attractive to these pesky mosquitoes. Consistently moist soil near your balcony will contribute to attracting mosquitoes and may even provide a breeding ground for them to multiply.
Pet bowls
If you are a pet parent, providing a water bowl for your pets helps keep them hydrated. However, it can also create a breeding ground for biting insects like mosquitoes. To prevent mosquito larvae from hatching, change the water in the bowl daily or bring it indoors when it’s not in use.
