An evening event: Le Diner en Blanc

Katlego Banoe, graphic designer, attended the fabulous Le Diner en Blanc in Jo’burg this year. The glam event takes place in cities all over the globe and this is what she experienced

A few weeks ago I was part of an exclusive, white-themed dinner party for the second edition of Le Diner en Blanc an event where people from different cultures and backgrounds came together for a mass picnic to enjoy an elegant evening of mingling, magic and great fun.

The invitation stated to come dressed in all-white clothing and that the dinner would be held at a secret location only to be made known on the day of the event. We were escorted by bus to the location which turned out to be the beautiful Library Lawns in front of the iconic Great Hall at Wits University.

We were also told to pack a picnic basket which should include white plates, white candles, wine glasses and cutlery – all to be used to set up our own table. The fun really began once everyone decorated their tables. There were some amazing table settings, beautiful white orchids as centrepieces, glass lamps to add sparkle to the table, and white table cloths to complete the elegant look. We were then asked to wave our white napkins as a traditional signal that we are ready to begin the feast.

The weather didn’t play along and due to rain we couldn’t light the sparklers – which was supposed to be an indication that the dance floor was open. Fortunately the rain didn’t stop the party as we all moved into the university hall, and as soaking wet as we were, continued dancing, singing and enjoying the fab evening.
