There is a good reason air plants have their name. Unlike other plants, they don’t have roots for absorbing water from the soil. Instead, air plants get water and nutrients from the air around them. This is why they need to be watered the right way to soak up the moisture they need from water and humidity.

To properly water your air plants, follow these tips on how often to provide them with water.

Misting the plants

The misting technique is useful for caring for your air plants. Misting with a spray bottle can supplement your regular watering routine, but it doesn’t provide enough consistent moisture on its own. Air plants require frequent misting—ideally every day—to thrive.

The soaking method

The optimal way to water air plants is by soaking them in water. Most species of air plants benefit from this submersion technique. After submerging your plants in water, remove them and gently shake off any excess moisture. Set your air plant upside down on a clean cloth and allow it to drain for an hour or two. Don’t return your air plants to their position until they’re completely dry. Placing wet plants inside an enclosure can lead to rot.  Any moisture pooling at the base of the air plants’ leaves may cause rot.

How often to water air plants

Other than watering on a set schedule, your plants will let you know when they need water. Just take a close look at their leaves. The edges of each leaf will curl inward along its length as the plant uses up moisture. If one plant seems sufficiently hydrated, skipping a week of watering is recommended. If all of the plants seem to dry up halfway through the week, a mid-week misting will do instead of submerging them. All this depends on whether you have a xeric variety or a mesic variety of air plants. These two varieties will depend on how and when to water the plants.

Since the plants get their nutrients from water, it’s best to use water rich in minerals and nutrients. Collect rainwater and use it to water your air plants. You should avoid using distilled water, as it lacks essential minerals. However, don’t stress too much, as clean, mineral-rich water will do just fine for your plants.
