There’s something magical about winter—wool socks, warm mugs, and the simple pleasure of staying in. But one of my favourite ways to welcome the chillier months is by refreshing my home’s colour palette. Think rich wine hues, velvety greens, and creamy neutrals that make every room feel like a warm hug.

Here’s how to bring that snug, winter-ready feeling into your space with colour—and just the right touch of texture.

Start with warm neutrals

Forget icy whites—winter calls for creamy tones with a hint of brown or beige. They act as the perfect foundation for layering, softening the edges of a room and making everything feel a bit more grounded.

Try this: Swap out your crisp summer linens for warmer-toned throws and textured cushions. A chunky knit in oatmeal or caramel can make even a minimalist space feel toasty.

Burgundy is your best friend

There’s something so indulgent about burgundy and deep wine hues. They feel luxurious without trying too hard, like a velvet robe for your living room.

Try this: Add a deep red armchair, berry-hued scatter cushions, or even a bold burgundy wall in a smaller space like a guest loo or reading nook.

Olive and sage greens bring calm

These greens are perfect for creating a restful environment, and they pair beautifully with neutral backdrops and wooden accents.

Try this: A sage-toned feature wall in the lounge, bedroom or kitchen cabinets in olive can make all the difference. If you’re not up for painting, houseplants in terracotta pots also do the trick.

Don’t forget texture

Colour may set the tone, but texture brings it to life. Winter is all about layers—faux furs, soft velvets, nubby wool. These elements make your home feel more lived-in and loved.

Try this: Drape a faux fur over the back of your sofa, add a fluffy rug underfoot, or mix textures on your bed with a blend of linen, velvet and chunky knits.

Add subtle metallics

A touch of bronze, gold or even matte black can elevate your space without making it feel too festive. Think of it as jewellery for your home.

Try this: Replace a few accent pieces with metallic ones—a brass lamp here, a gold-framed mirror there. It adds polish and contrast to all those soft tones.

Make it personal

The best part of decorating for winter is that it’s not about perfection. It’s about comfort. A framed photo, a candle in your favourite scent, or a cosy corner with a book and a blanket can be just as impactful as a new paint job.

Winter doesn’t mean your space has to feel dark and heavy. With the right colours—think rich burgundies, warm neutrals, olive greens—and a few thoughtful touches, your home can become the sanctuary you look forward to every day. Just layer, light a candle, and let the season in.
