Most of us don’t realise just how much time we spend in bed – roughly a third of our lives. And while we may love climbing into a cosy, freshly made bed, the truth is that your sheets collect dust, sweat, skin cells, and oils faster than you think. Washing them properly (and often) is the key to keeping them clean, soft, and lasting longer.

Here’s a simple guide to making sure your sheets stay in top condition.

How often should you wash them?

The golden rule is once a week. If you have allergies, sweat a lot at night, or live somewhere particularly hot, you may want to wash them even more frequently. Clean sheets don’t just feel good – they’re better for your health too.

What you’ll need

  • Washing machine
  • Gentle laundry detergent
  • Stain remover, bicarbonate of soda or white vinegar
  • Dryer (optional)
  • Clothesline or drying rack

Step-by-step guide

Check the label

Not all sheets are made the same. Cotton, linen, silk, and blends all need slightly different care. The tag will guide you on water temperature, cycle choice, and whether certain detergents should be avoided.

Treat stains first

Before you toss them in the wash, scan for stains. A dab of stain remover usually does the trick, but natural options like vinegar and bicarbonate of soda work well too. Always test on a small spot first if you’re worried about marks.

Use the right detergent

Less is more. A mild detergent in the recommended amount keeps sheets clean without leaving behind residue that can make fabric stiff.

Wash on their own

Give your sheets space in the machine – avoid mixing them with bulky items like towels. If they’re tangled up, shake them out before loading to help water and detergent flow evenly.

Choose the correct cycle

Warm water is perfect for cotton and blends, as it helps remove oils and dust mites. Delicate fabrics like silk or linen need a cool wash and a gentle cycle to prevent damage.

Dry with care

Air drying is best if you want your sheets to last. Peg them on the line and let the sun do its job – it’s eco-friendly and leaves them smelling wonderfully fresh. If you prefer the tumble dryer, use a low to medium heat and remove them as soon as they’re dry to avoid creasing. Dryer balls can help prevent clumping and reduce drying time.

Storing fresh sheets

Make sure your sheets are completely dry before folding and packing them away to avoid any musty smells. Store them in a cool, dry cupboard or drawer. For an extra touch, slip a lavender sachet between the folds for a light, calming fragrance.

Washing your sheets properly doesn’t take much extra effort, but it makes all the difference. Clean sheets equal better sleep, a fresher bedroom, and linens that last longer.
