A garden can be more than a patch of grass or a collection of plants. With the right furniture, it can become a comfortable outdoor living space where you can relax, dine, entertain guests, or simply enjoy a quiet morning in the fresh air.

However, choosing garden furniture is not just about finding pieces that look attractive. You also need to consider comfort, durability, available space, maintenance, and your personal style.

You need to consider outdoor space

Before buying anything, you need to understand the area where you plan to place your furniture. A large dining set may look impressive in a showroom but could overwhelm a small patio or balcony. For compact spaces, consider folding chairs and benches that can be rearranged when necessary.

Larger gardens offer more flexibility. You could create separate zones, such as a dining area for meals and an informal seating area for relaxing.

Choose durable materials

Garden furniture is exposed to sunlight, wind, rain, and fluctuating temperatures, making durability essential. Wooden furniture offers a warm, natural look and complements both traditional and contemporary gardens. However, certain types of wood need regular cleaning, sealing, or oiling to maintain their appearance.

Metal furniture is sturdy and often features a modern design. Aluminium furniture is lightweight and rust-resistant, while steel is extremely strong but may require adequate protection against corrosion.

Plastic furniture materials are generally lightweight, affordable, and easy to clean.

Think about comfort

Good-looking furniture is not necessarily comfortable furniture. If you plan to spend long periods outdoors, test chairs and sofas before purchasing them. Look for supportive seating, a suitable seat height, and cushions designed for outdoor use.

Cushions should have weather-resistant covers and quick-drying fillings. Storing them in a dry place when not in use extends their lifespan.

Match furniture to your lifestyle

Think about how you intend to use your garden.

If you regularly eat outdoors, a sturdy dining table and comfortable dining chairs should be your priority. If your garden is mainly a place for relaxation, a sofa, lounge chairs, or a daybed may be more suitable.

For entertaining, modular seating can be particularly useful because it allows you to adapt the arrangement depending on the number of guests. Families may also benefit from furniture that is easy to clean and resistant to everyday wear.

Your garden furniture should complement your home and garden. Natural wood can create a timeless look, while metal and minimalist designs can suit modern properties. Neutral-coloured furniture provides flexibility, allowing you to introduce colour through cushions and accessories.
