You probably don’t give your toilet brush much thought until it’s time to clean the loo. But while it works hard to keep your toilet sparkling, the brush itself also needs regular attention.
If you’re cleaning your toilet but never washing the brush afterwards, you’re simply spreading bacteria around every time you use it. The good news? Keeping your toilet brush clean only takes a few simple habits and can make your bathroom feel fresher and more hygienic.
1. Rinse it thoroughly after every use
Once you’ve finished cleaning the toilet, rinse the brush well with hot water. Don’t just dip it in the bowl – make sure the bristles are properly rinsed to remove any remaining residue.
This quick step helps prevent build-up and keeps the brush cleaner between deep cleans.
2. Let it dry before storing it
One of the biggest mistakes people make is putting a wet toilet brush straight back into its holder.
Instead, balance the handle across the toilet bowl or position it so the bristles can drip dry for a while. Allowing the brush to dry before storing it reduces moisture, which bacteria and mould thrive on.
3. Keep the holder clean too
A toilet brush holder can collect dirty water and residue over time, making it a source of unpleasant odours.
Choose a holder with drainage or ventilation if possible, and clean it regularly with hot, soapy water or a disinfectant. Dry it thoroughly before returning the brush.
4. Deep clean your toilet brush weekly
A quick rinse is great for everyday maintenance, but your toilet brush also needs a proper clean.
Once a week, soak the brush in a disinfecting solution for around 10 to 15 minutes. White vinegar is a simple, natural option that helps loosen grime and neutralise odours. Afterwards, rinse the brush well and allow it to dry completely before storing it.
5. Replace it when it’s worn out
Even with regular cleaning, a toilet brush won’t last forever.
If the bristles are bent, frayed, stained or no longer scrub effectively, it’s time for a replacement. In most homes, replacing your toilet brush every six to 12 months is a good rule of thumb for keeping your bathroom hygienic.
A cleaner bathroom starts with the little things
It’s easy to overlook your toilet brush, but a few minutes of maintenance each week can make a noticeable difference. By rinsing it after every use, letting it dry properly, cleaning the holder and replacing it when needed, you’ll help keep your bathroom cleaner, fresher and more hygienic.
