Ways to keep your pets cool during extreme heat

With the Western coast of South Africa heating up and extreme heat waves becoming more common, many people are scrambling to find ways to keep their companion animals cool. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are very real possibilities if pets aren’t monitored carefully during extreme heat.

These are just a few tips on how to keep your furry friends cool during this heatwave season.

Water, water everywhere!

Keep water bowls filled with cool, clean water in multiple locations throughout the area. Always check and freshen water bowls more frequently than usual, and you can drop some ice cubes to make the water both more appealing and more effective at cooling your pet. A water fountain in your garden can also help your pets keep hydrated by making water more visually inviting.

Pet them with a damp washcloth

This is more for your feline pets, but dogs will probably love it too. Soak a washcloth in cold water, then wring it out thoroughly, so it’s only just barely damp. Lightly pet or massage your cat or dog’s back, that’s if they’ll let you. If you can do this in front of a fan, that’s even better. Your pets will feel the sensation of air going over the washcloth, and their slightly damp fur provides a cooling effect.

Shade is essential

If outdoors, ensure ample shade throughout the day as the sun moves. Allow your dogs to seek refuge inside the house or in the garage, as they also need shading from the extreme heat.

Limit exercise heat alert days

Take care when exercising your pet. On very hot days, like the ones we have been experiencing this week, it’s good to limit exercise to maybe the evening hours. The tar pavements get very hot and can burn your pet’s paws, so walk your dog on the grass, if possible, even during the evening. Always carry water with you to keep your dog from dehydrating.

Offer ice treats

Just like humans enjoy a refreshing ice lolly when it’s hot outside, your dog might too. Offer pop ice cubes in their bowl to keep their water cool. But keep a watch, as they can be a choking hazard. You can even purchase ice lollies specially for dogs, which can make a tasty snack.
