Acidic soil can greatly affect the growth, development, and productivity of vegetables. However, some garden plants thrive in acidic soils and settle without difficulty. In some cases, you might need to correct the soil’s pH to rebalance it before you plant.
How to know if your garden soil is acidic
A soil analysis kit is needed to check the pH balance of your soil and determine its acidity level. Soil alkalinity and acidity are rated according to their pH, which can be read by the analysis kit. What type of rocks are present in your subsoil, the composition of the soil itself, its limestone content, and which fertilisers are used all influence determining the acidity of your garden soil. The soil in your garden can be considered slightly to moderately acidic.
Vegetables to plant in acidic soil
With your soil’s pH acidic and balanced, you will hardly be limited in your plantings if your garden soil is at the correct acidity. The biological activity of well-acidic soils will consist of microorganisms that add to the soil’s richness. Your soil will be more humus-rich with earthworms and other small inhabitants that add nutrients to the soil and plants. When your soil has the correct acidity, these are the few plants you can grow:

- Pumpkins: They are very tolerant veggies, and they’ll grow just about in any soil, even out of your organic compost.
- Beans: Since they can utilise the nitrogen in the atmosphere, beans are plants that help enrich the soil in your garden, contributing to its well-balanced composition.
- Potato: Growing potatoes helps break up the soil in your garden. They are also one of the most acid-loving vegetables to grow. So, for the benefit of your garden, potatoes are a bonus.
- Carrots: They are sweet, crunchy, delicious raw or cooked and rich in vitamin A. Since they grow underground, they do well in soils with a more acidic pH balance. Providing your soils with the right nutrients to harvest more carrots.
