Houseplant beginners should not be beholden to only green plants. While there are some beautiful green leaf plants, there are plenty of colourful houseplants that those new to the world of plant care can handle. If you’re just starting your houseplant journey, these are some of the few colourful houseplants to go for.

Coleus

The best part about coleus houseplants is that they thrive both indoors and outdoors. You can add colour to your indoor jungle or outdoor garden by choosing coleus plants. They come in a variety of colours and can grow a bit tall or can be encouraged to grow wide with the right plant care. They propagate very easily, so you just snip a stem and stick it in the soil wherever you want it. As far as their indoor care goes, you’ll want to aim for bright morning light and indirect light throughout the day.

Oxalis

If you are looking for purple houseplants that are easy to care for, the Oxalis is hard to beat. With radiating shades of purple, violet, and plum, this choice is a definite colour splash for any home. These beautiful purple plants love to be kept moist almost all the time, but they are otherwise very easy to care for. They reproduce quickly and can add a pop of colour wherever they are. Oxalis are quick to bounce back if there’s a misstep in their care.

Snake Plants

This easy succulent plant is almost indestructible. Snake plants are so low-maintenance, tolerating low levels of light and little water while still maintaining their good looks, with their leaves adding strong vertical lines to any space. There are several different varieties with different leaf shapes and patterns. New houseplant owners should beware that these plants are toxic to humans and pets if eaten.

Begonias

For cool, purple and pink hues, with some silver and green tones, begonia houseplants are the perfect choice. While they are beginner-friendly, begonias can be slightly more challenging and are better for newbies who have already successfully added one or two more houseplants to their care. They can get tricky with their watering needs because they like to be fairly consistently moist but never soaking wet.
